New upsell discount rule - August 21, 2026
This update lets you tie an Upsell discount to its main product, so the discount can't outlive the product it belongs to.
What's new
Remove the upsell discount when the main product is removed
When you enable this for an upsell, the discount applies only while the main product (the product the upsell is offered on) is still in the cart. As soon as the customer removes that main product, the linked upsell discount is removed automatically and the item returns to its regular price. It also works with multiple stacked offers, each one is checked on its own.
Why this is useful:
- Prevents customers from keeping an upsell price without the product that unlocked it
- Keeps cart and checkout totals correct and predictable
- Protects your margins on offers that were only meant to apply as an add-on
How to enable it
1
Open your upsell
Go to Upsells and open the upsell you want to update.
2
Find the setting
Open the Offer & Settings tab and scroll down to Settings.
3
Enable and save
Turn on Require main product in cart and save your changes.

The setting is off by default, so nothing changes for your existing upsells until you switch it on.
Tipp
The discount is removed, but the upsell product itself stays in the cart at its regular price. The check runs on every cart update and carries through to checkout, and it works with the native Shopify cart as well as third-party cart drawer apps.
